Introducing Enhanced Security Chip Cards
Point Breeze Credit Union will soon offer credit and debit cards with chip technology. The embedded computer chip provides more security and wider international acceptance.
A microchip embedded in every card adds a new layer of protection against fraud for purchases made at the point of sale. Information programmed into the chip is personalized for your account and each transaction generates a unique code, adding an extra safeguard against unauthorized use and counterfeiting.
These cards are already in wide use around the world and are now becoming the standard in the U.S.
Your new chip card is coming soon
To ensure that all of our cardholders have the additional protections offered by chip cards as soon as possible, we will be replacing all credit and debit cards over the next several months.
There is no need to request your chip card. You’ll automatically receive your chip card in the mail.
Once your new card arrives, be sure to activate it for use and then destroy your old card. There is no charge to you for the new card.
Using your new chip card is easy
For everyday purchases, continue using your card as you do today. Until merchants have switched to chip-enabled terminals, just swipe it. For merchants accepting chip transactions, follow these easy steps:
- Insert your card face up and chip end into the chip-enabled terminal and follow the prompts.
- Leave your card inserted during the entire transaction.
- Sign or enter your PIN as you normally would to verify the transaction.
- Remove your card once your transaction is complete and take your receipt.
Online or phone purchases
Provide your card information as you have done in the past. Chip cards will not change the way payments are made online or by telephone.
The process is essentially the same as at a merchant. Insert your card, leave it in the ATM and follow the prompts on the screen. Depending on the type of ATM, you might be prompted to re-insert your card in the ATM until the transaction is complete and the card is released, and then remove your card. A PIN is needed for ATM transactions.
All debit and credit cards that we issue, including the new chip cards, come with Visa® Zero Liability protection, so you are not held liable for unauthorized transactions if a card is lost, stolen or fraudulently used at a merchant or online. It is important that you promptly report a lost or stolen card or any suspicious transactions to our Member Service Center.1
As always, we are here to serve you. When you receive your new chip card in the mail, if you have questions or need assistance with how to activate or use your new card, please contact our Member Service Center at 410.584.7228 or 888.233.7228.
1Visa®Zero Liability policy covers all Visa® credit and debit card transactions processed over the Visa® network, online or off. The only transactions not covered under the Zero Liability policy are commercial card, ATM and non-Visa-branded PIN transactions. See your Account Agreement for liability and reporting requirements for unauthorized transactions.
